Let’s Jump In

This is your monthly “Spark” newsletter for all things arts integration. At Partner Learning we believe in art being at the core of learning and we know this requires the support of a collaborative partner. This September we are emphasizing resources relating to narrative writing because this time of year there is a vertical focus on these standards. We will also include some math resources to add to your toolbox.

NOTE: These are teacher-facing resources, be sure to preview materials before sharing them with students.

Narrative Pantomime (K-5)

A drama strategy that can be used to guide students in including rich details in their narrative “small moment” writing. It can especially support students with revising their writing to add details. This strategy can be introduced by using a read-aloud and then leading/ or directing students orally through a pantomime retelling the story.

Here is an example video of how to do this using a picture book. The lesson plan takes it to the next level and applies pantomime to the writing process for narrative-style writing.

Comic Stripping (K-5)

A visual arts strategy that can be used  across all content areas to visually tell a story or explain a concept. This brief video will walk you through how. Here is a video example of Comic stripping that can be used K-5 including the arts vocabulary and examples.

Soundscapping (K-5)

A music strategy that can be used to underscore a book or story. Soundscaping can take place with found objects, instruments, or even students’ own voices and bodies.

Here is a soundscaping video that demonstrates how illustrations create meaning in texts using the music modality. This example is brought to us by the Tate Modern Education department.

Math Ideas

ADDITION USING TEN FRAME WITH POP ART (K-1)

Students can explore the pop art movement and then create their own ten-frame pop art to use with their math manipulative chips to solve addition problems.

At the end of this video, there are directions on how to create an oil pastel on a strip of paper which you can create divided into a ten frame.  Students can even generate math stories/ word problems using the pop art objects and chips to solve the problems.

VISUAL ARTS AND PLACE VALUE (1-5)

This Kandinsky lesson can link to place value and this video talks you through how the circles in his style of art could represent the thousands, hundreds, tens, and ones based on the size of the circle and the scale the student creates. This is a fun project to do and then have students “solve one another’s art pieces” determine all of the various ways to represent the number (expanded form, word form, etc)

MOVEMENT & PLACE VALUE (1-2)

This movement strategy links place value base ten blocks to movement. This is a fun way to let your students use their bodies to represent numbers.

MOVEMENT AND ADDITION (K-1)

Adding Using Number Line and Number Bonds

Explore the number line by creating a life size number line with painter’s tape. Let students hop on the number line to solve addition and subtraction equations. Also in the video, you see how to use hula hoops to create number bonds. These make great movement/ math centers.

Office Hours

We know when engaging in arts integration, we all need a “thought partner”. This is why our team will hold monthly virtual office hours after- school on Wednesdays (2:45- 3:45 pm)

Kindergarten & Grade 1: 1st Wednesday of each month

Grade 2 & 3: 3rd Wednesday of each month

Grade 4 & 5: 4th Wednesday of each month
