What is Arts Integration?

Arts Integration is an approach to teaching in which students construct and demonstrate understanding through an art form. Students engage in a creative process which connects an art form and another subject area and meets evolving objectives in both.

Why Arts Integration?

The arts provide a diverse means of expression for students as they construct meaning about the world around them. Instead of taking a more passive role listening to a teacher lecture, students are actively creating something that has meaning for them. Arts integration invites artistic choices and expression in students and leads to more personalized learning experiences for students (Ellis and Fouts, 2001).

  • Increase student engagement

  • Promote deeper understanding and increase retention of material (Wolkowicz, 2017)

  • Lead to neuroscience gains such as greater cognition, long-term memory, and thinking skills (Krakaur, 2017)
